Thailand

The land of smiles and tuk-tuk drivers that just want to rip you off, and still smugly smile even when you think you've got a good price for a ride!

Ahh.. some great drunken memories belong to my time in Thailand! From the lovely beaches of Koh Tao to the equally lovely but far less visited (as I spent the daylight hours asleep!) beaches of Koh Phi Phi

Bangkok (and all its unfunny 'bang my cock' styley names)

The gateway to South-East Asia (from europe anyhow)? What a place for a poor innocent, 19 year old, gap-year to start their travels, yet they all do! Iíd love to know how many have arrived, been tricked outta all their cash in the first day and got on the next flight home!

Iím being a little harsh! Yes, you have to have your wits about you and your wallet or you'll quickly loose both but you soon come to love the manic paced, crazy place! It has its own special, unique feel (and smell), and when I've had to pass back through on my travels it feels familiar and safe in some way, like nowhere else in Asia does! It has fascinating temples, great river rides and a few great bars as well! On my first visit I mainly went out on the Koa San Road but there is sooo much more to do! A guy I met took me to a blues bar (live band!) in a venue the size of my bedroom in MK!

There are of course the more tasteful areas where ugly 40 year old brits go to Ďfeel (a) young again?. BOH!! Itís disgusting! Seeing all these ugly, fat, bald men with these 17 yr old village girls! You have to let it all swim over you, and accept that this is what its all about!

I arrived on the 3rd of July, and waited a week for my old mucker Hazel to arrive for the real drinking to begin. We then met her two friends from home (Northern Ireland) and the fun began!

Koh Tao, Sumui, Pha Ngan

Ahh, the islands. Come here and I promise you'll never go on another 500 UKP package, all-inclusive holiday to a hell-hole Spanish resort! Koh Tao was my fav. Although a little too diving orientated it still is a fantastic place to chill, snorkel, drink and eat! BBQ fish is the stable diet here (that and of course Beer Chang). I discovered that diving made me sick (I had to drop out of my course!) and that beer and beach is a good combo! A beach hut for a couple of pounds a night, heaven!

Koh Sok National Park

From the islands we moved onto Koh Sok National Park, a newly created national park that seems to be getting big on the backpacking circuit with no one quite knowing why!

I said my first good bye to Emma, Hazel and Clair and stuck around to trek an 8 hour trek through a dangerous elephant area (I didn't understand the broken english sign...!) The park wardens didn't warn me and let another group set out on the 8-hour trek at 1530 (no chance getting back in the light!

Koh Phi Phi - AKA that place they filmed The Beach...

With a bar that stays open till 9am, and some of the best beaches in SE Asia, why go elsewhere! Indeed some people only make it this far! It features a nightclub with live (fake) Thai Boxing matches and Cocktail buckets (the slogan is 'fuck-it, I'll have another bucket!')
