My Arrival

I arrived in Queenstown after spending Christmas in Sydney. I found myself staying at a hostel the guidebook described as dilapidated. It was overrun with my least favourite travelling nation (if you've met me you'll know who this is!). I didn't quite like it at first, and even contemplated moving hostel...

My aim was to find a job, a flat and get settled in time for the ski-season. I found a job at Winnie Bagoes (a local bar / restaurant) for the, staggeringly high, $10 an hour! I soon settled in, and even invented some of my own shots (see below!!)

There was still the problem of accommodation. I'd since met Dan and Mitzi (the managers of Bungi Backpackers) and found that they had an opening of cleaning for accommodation. I had no idea what this accommodation would be but saw it as a great stop-gap solution.

So there is was my life consisted of getting up at 10am (having hit my bed at 5am), cleaning a kitchen for two hours and then going back to bed until work.... and I loved it..

Oh and the accommodation turned out to be living in a caravan 'bolted' onto the back of the backpackers.

Snowboarding and other Activities

Arriving so early in the season meant I got a season pass for $499!! Bargainous! As well as the local ski-fields there are other things to amuse yourselves with in Queenstown such as Frisbee Golf (which I excelled in, in being really bad at), cycling around the tracks and roads and climbing up this blooming big hill to Ben Lomond Peak...

Memorable Moments

I had some great times in Queenstown. You can go out drinking until 5am if you can handle it. Some of the best bits were Drunken Dare Monopoly, playing Charades in the Bunker until 8am, heading off to the rugby with Dan and Tim and just getting on with the people I worked with!

Winnies Secret Shooters

These shots below are all shots we enjoyed and sold some of them under the threat of sacking (especially the Hot Lunch)! I feel they are worth remembering though!

Baby Guinness - One for the girls! Kahlua with Bailey's layered on top. A real conisuier will insist on a drizzle of Cointreau to sweeten the flavour.

Buffalo Sweat - A nice Bourbon (your choice!) mixed with a generous splattering of Tabasco sauce (mixed).

Cactus Juice - Half tequila and half Chartreuse, again mixed. Not for people that savour their palette

Prairie Fire - Tequila and Tabasco together as they should be, with the head to complicate matters!

Buffalo Sweat - Bourbon and Tabasco mixed, and somehow getting along!

Jack Hammer - Half Jack Daniels and half Tequila, mixed and served with a smile!

Mike Tyson - Another 'iron man/woman' shot. Tequila, a generous lashing of Tabasco and Chartreuse.

The Hot Lunch - A Steve original, now famous a Winnies! Anyone who understands what a good hot lunch really is will appreciate the shot,. Inspired by the real thing, in both colour and in taste! Black Sambucca with Bailey's, made authentic with a double squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Leave to mature for as long as you dare!

The Flat-liner - The original 'Iron man/woman' shot, White Sambuca with a 'generous' layer of Tabasco sauce, finished with a tequila head to start the taste sensation!

The Defibrillator - A Winnies original! The follow-up to the Flat-liner. Black Sambuca, a layer of Tabasco and topped off with Chartreuse. A true night starter/ender (delete as appropriate!).

The Near Death Experience - A two-shot combo for special occasions. Line up a Flat-liner and a Defibrillator with your mates and enjoy! Naming credits to Jake!
