Working Holiday Visa - New Zealand

Shunning, the now almost compulsory, WHV (working holiday visa) in Australia, I decided to choose the land of the long white cloud.

After managing to pull myself off of the floor of a bar in Melbourne and stagger to the airport, here I am! I'm planning to stay in Auckland until April and then cycle the South Island.

Rotorua

Chimp and I hired a car for no money a day and took off on a lovely Thursday afternoon to Rotorua. It's an area famous for its geothermic activity (i.e. mud pools, geysers, hot pools etc) and it's important to the Maori people.

Now after all this culture, we decided to go luging, (read as, get on a small plastic cart, put on a flimsy helmet and chuck yourself down a hill). We described it as

'The most fun you can have with your pants on' - Tim Craven

'The most fun you can have with someone else's helmet' - Steve Morgan

Mount Maunganui

A few hours away we stopped at Mount Maunganui for the night, which is a lovely little town with a mountain (read as small hill) that me and chimp 'conquered'.

Unfortunately not all of the hire car made it back with us to Auckland (some little b*****s stole our hub caps, and all of those from every car parked in the town centre!), but the good people at the Warehouse store ('where everyone gets a bargain') happily sold us some replacement hub caps, and the dent went luckily unnoticed! Hence the shots of us clutching a Nissan hub cap (for a size test).

Taupo

A few weekends later we had itchy feet again and headed for Lake Taupo. Possibly the most picturesque lake in the world, with a mountain complete with glacier top in view! Here chimp and me watched England take the world cup in the Rugby Union, but not before threw ourselves gallantly off a bridge with a bungee cord attached!

More to follow, when it happens!

New Zealand Sheep...

The damaged hire car, minus the hub caps the kids stole...

Me with the hub cap, looking sad!
