Unfortunately I didn't get my camera until I got to KL, so until I get some
traditional photos scanned, there is a big gap here! Malaysia is one of the self acclaimed most Muslim countries in the world. So devoutly Muslim that they love to
remind you every day of the fact in the newspaper, mmm. Malaysia is a indeed a strange one, it wants to be western, without losing its values, oh and without getting on with
most western countries!

Undergoing a name change (to loose yet another colonial name) this is a nice old town, which is fairly safe on the
north-western island. Close to Thailand, so has excellent transport links. It's not particularly striking, but pleasant enough for a day or two!
Cameroon Highlands Where tea is grown! There are some truly picturesque views to be found here and some jungle trekking (no animals, they were all shot and ate years ago). The first time I had cold feet in 6 weeks! It can get pretty nippy here (because of the altitude!). If you go there is a guesthouse called the Camerian Inn, where a volunteer does free tours. Lovely! Kota Bahruk The nutty Muslim area of Malaysia, and its second (or is it third) biggest town. A good stop over to the Perhentian Islands (though contrary to popular belief you don't have to!). There is even Arabic script on the road signs, to prove how devoutly Muslim they are, (though I couldn't find anyone who could read it!) Perhentian Islands The most beautiful beaches I've ever scene. Unsurprisingly since the Singaporians have begun to make this a holiday destination, the prices have gone up. But look out for the backpackers on the far left of Long Beach (on the small island), up on the hill side is a shabby, yet damn cheap complex of basic beach huts! (See the tasteful notice on the toilet door). Here I went on a snorkelling trip and see, a giant turtle, sharks, and more different types of fish and coral than I see in 6 weeks in Thailand! Well recommended! Taman Negara National Park First off, don't bother with the expensive boat trip in, there is now a road (with a bus for the locals that they don't tell you about!). It's a park that is older than the Amazon! Some great trekkin' opportunities, but don't go if you don't like leeches! The canopy walkway is a must for a photo op, though I found it a little disappointing! Kuala Lumpur KL is a great example of everything that is right and wrong with Malaysia! It's a great introduction to a country that is ethnically diverse (and it works, or so they tell you)! I'm being harsh, it is a beautiful county and KL is a very clean and efficient city! It has all the shopping complexes you could want, plus all of the luxuries you'd find anywhere. It had a cool china town (where if its boot-leggable, its available!) oh and some naff caves! Take a look at the Petronas Towers (the tallest in the world), which Malaysians are fiercely proud of, despite commercially being a flop as they are less that half full and wonder around little India (great curries!). Sabah & Sarawak Don't miss the other two areas of Malaysia (on Borneo island shared with Indonesia). See my separate Sabah section. I didn't have time for Sarawak!
