My Set-up & Gear

 

 

Below is a full inventory of what I took on tour. I used a few websites; books and some guess work to come up with this list! See my links section for more detailed, experienced advice!

My bike is a customised GT Avalanche 2.0. It has had the front suspension took off, a jump fork with eyelets for the rack drilled added, and two custom made brackets to angle the rear rack away from the disc brakes! My advice, unless you have a patient bike mechanic to hand – buy a tourer!

 

 

Bike
  • Bike (GT Avalanche 2.0, 2004 Mountain Bike - With hybrid road tires)
  • Pair Rear Panniers (Ortlieb's Classics)
  • Pair Front Panniers (Cheapies!)
  • 3 x Water bottles (in summer I found carrying a big juice bottle useful)
  • 2 x Racks (front a low-rider)
  • 2 x Custom made brackets to get the racks to fit around the disc brakes!
  • Cycle Computer (Cyclo that constantly failed in the rain)
  • Rear Light
  • Front Light (converts to head torch)
  • Lock
  • Straps & Bungee cords
  • Cleated Pedals
  • Helmet (with head rear-view mirror attached)
  • Gloves
  • Frame Pump

 

 

Cycling Equipment
  • Pedallers' Paradise Guide Book
  • Cycling NZ, Lonely Planet (sent home after a couple of days as it was crap)
  • Mini Road Atlas, replaced by map
  • Notebook (journal, letter material etc. etc.)
  • Pen
  • First Aid Kit
  • Multi Tool
  • 15mm Spanner (for removing pedals for buses)
  • Swiss Army Knife
  • Puncture Repair Kit
  • Chain Lube (also works as de-lube)
  • Spare Inner Tube
  • Duct tape removed from roll and rolled into small wad
  • Cloth for chain (note other half of towel is useful!)
  • Latex Gloves (for roadside repairs)

 

 

Camping
  • One Man Tent
  • Sleeping Bag Inner
  • Tarp (cut to tent size)
  • Sleeping Bag (to 2C)
  • Roll Mat
  • Folding Camp Stove (aka pocket rocket)
  • Gas Cannister

 

 

Food (note being a 'credit card' tourer I don't carry dinner!
  • 3+ x 'Bumper Bars' (NZ's very best muesli bars, mmm)
  • 1 x Emergency Pasta Meal
  • 3 x Breakfast Oats Single Serve Sachets
  • Lunch for that day
  • Roll Mat
  • Folding Camp Stove (aka pocket rocket)
  • Gas Canister
  • Water Purification Tablets (not used)

 

 

Clothing
  • Bike Shoes (to fit cleats)
  • Sandals (which I replaced with shoes when I got too cold!)
  • 2 x Long Sleeve Shirts
  • 2 x Thermal Cycling Socks
  • 2 x Cycling Shorts
  • Cycling Rain Jacket
  • Cycling Skull cap (fits under helmet)
  • Cycling Trousers (to fit over shorts NOT Waterproof!)
  • 3 x Boxers
  • 2 x T-shirts (cotton)
  • Long Sleeved (cotton) Top
  • Thermals
  • 3 x Off Cycle Socks
  • Jeans
  • Casual Shorts
  • Fleece, (off cycle only, you will be too hot!)

 

 

Toiletries
  • King of Shaves (Shaving oil), nice and light and compact
  • Disposable Razors
  • Insect Repellent (think midges, sandflies are just as bad)
  • Floss
  • Toothpaste
  • Toothbrush
  • Soap, used on hair, body.... etc etc!
  • Toilet Roll
  • Lip Gloss with sun protection
  • Sun Cream 30+ SPF (defo required despite it being winter)
  • Deodorant (some cyclists seem to NOT use this :( )
  • Half a towel (you don't need a whole one!)
