Day 63 - A Grim day in the North
  • Wellington - Okita
  • Distance - 89.8 km
  • Ave Speed - 17.4 km/h
  • Time - 5 hrs, 8 mins
  • Total Distance - 3755 km

Traffic hell!! Left Wellington via the 'alternative' route', passing through the Hutt Valley (SH2). The first 35km was a dangerous, fumey hell, before I took a side turn and ended up on a road which couldn't have been more different (only 5 cars passed me in an hour!) Pausing only to take a photo of the comedy sign (above) the road soon joined back onto SH1, 15km South of Okita, my end point for today... mental note MUST avoid SH1 and SH2 if I wanna live! Okita Oasis backpackers was my rest stop $19, did the job!

Day 64 - More traffic....
  • Okita - Whanganui
  • Distance - 122.5 km
  • Ave Speed - 18.3 km/h
  • Time - 6 hrs, 40 mins
  • Total Distance - 3877 km

The (slightly strange) owner of the backpackers daid that 'loads' of cyclists come straight from Whanganui which of course set a presendence that I couldnt leave.. Today was a repeat of yesterdays fun (minus the cool road) though the scenery was much more interesting! NO magpies attacked me today, I don't want to speak too soon but I think the nesting season may be over! Stayed at the wonderful Tamara Backpackers $18.

Day 64 - Day of the Jack-ass
  • My bed - The telly
  • Cups of coffee - 13.5
  • Tutting - lots
  • Telling every Kerry lovin American 'I told them so' - 3

Took a day off to watch the US elections unfold on 'One' TVNZ, slightly confused panel covered the non-event (mostly by switching to ABC).

Day 66 - Mother f^&#ing wind... arrghh!
  • Whanganui - Hawea
  • Distance - 98.2 km
  • Ave Speed - 14.6 km/h, (wind lots of)
  • Time - 6 hrs, 42 mins
  • Total Distance - 3975 km

Still a fair amount of traffic (I guess I was spoilt in the South Island), and again no magpies.. After passing through the 'black' town of Patea (there were white New Zealanders too, that hostel owner was crazy), I struggled into Hawea and spent my 4th night in my tent at the lovely King Edwards Motor Camp $8.

Day 67 - More mother f^&#ing wind... arrghh!
  • Hawea - New Plymouth
  • Distance - 74.5 km
  • Ave Speed - 14.0 km/h
  • Time - 5 hrs, 17 mins
  • Total Distance - 4050 km

In the cyclists gospel chapter 1, verse 1.2 reads 'In the path of the righteous cyclist, if said cyclist still has to pedal against the devil wind, when going in the direction of the underworld (downhill) then blessed is the saviour who turns around and packs in for the day'.

It was actually pretty dangerous as the trucks (which in NZ all tow huuuage trailers) would cause so much air turbulence you felt like you were lifted from the road and then dumped back, every time one over took! The route is overlooked by Mt Egmont (aka Mt Taranaki) the whole way, which is a classic volcanoes shape, but looks all the more impressive as its completely alone! I struggled into N. Plymouth but not before my closet encounter with a huge truck yet! WHHOOOSSHHHHHH Shoestring Backpackers $18.

Day 68 - A good day for the weather!
    New Plymouth - Mokau
  • Distance - 90.7 km
  • Ave Speed - 16.7 km/h
  • Time - 5 hrs, 24 mins
  • Total Distance - 4141 km

A good day! Thank god! I'll admit that I had a lot of ideas of just packing in the tour at this point and heading for Auckland! The sun was out for most of the day and the traffic was not as heavy (maybe its a positive attitude thing!), everyone was going to the Speedway in New Plymouth (so in the opposite direction hundreds of motorcyclists passed me). Mt Egmont watched over my ride until I got into Whitebait country. I stayed at the 'Whitebait Inn' motor camp with the geriatric white baiters! $6 bargainous...

Day 69 - Dare I say it... now its too hot!
  • Mokau - Kinohaku
  • Distance - 92.9 km
  • Ave Speed - 15.4 km/h
  • Time - 6 hrs
  • Total Distance - 4233 km

A beautiful day and I got cooked alive! Some of the big hills really took it out of me in the heat. I was worried that there wouldn't be any shops on route (i.e. no ice creams which had become a mental staple of my cyclist diet, ie if I can just get to Y place then I'll treat myself to an ice-cream at X...) but I found one. Just as I thought I might have to do another 50km to Kinohaku a backpackers appeared out of nowhere... Which was good as it would have just left a short day to Raglan (51km) oh and I couldn't be arsed! The Lazy Hedgehog was my saviour, $18.
