Day 29 - Traffic, traffic everywhere and not a rain drop that didn't fall on my head
  • ChCh - Ashburton
  • Distance - 87.1 km
  • Ave Speed - 17.2 km/h
  • Time - 5 hrs, 3 mins
  • Total Distance - 1613 km
  • Magpie Attacks - 1

A wet, cold day. In fact it was 8C! There was a nasty icy wind, the southerlies come off the Antartic! Got completely soaked, though the highlight was a stop at the CookieTime factory! mmmm Not much to see otherwise, and Ashburton was probably one of the worst towns I've been to! Stayed at 'Tuarangi Backpackers' a haunted, ex-old peoples home... very little's changed since the last oldie left! $15

Day 30 - Ummm insert witty title here
  • Ashburton - Timaru
  • Distance - 81.3 km
  • Ave Speed - 20.5 km/h
  • Time - 3 hrs, 58 mins
  • Total Distance - 1694 km

Just look at that average speed... No wind! That was all of interest today. State Highway 1 is all traffic and no scenery! Stayed at '334 on Stafford St' a great hostel! $18

Day 31 - Traffic, Traffic everywhere and not a stop in sight!
  • Timaru - Omaru
  • Distance - 92.8 km
  • Ave Speed - 18.6 km/h
  • Time - 4 hrs, 58 mins
  • Total Distance - 1787 km

Again a dullish day, getting sick of SH1! (oh and not enough toilets!) In Omaru, its pengiun time, though where I had been tipped to stand for free they were filming 'The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe', so I didn't see the blue birds, only the yellow ones! Stayed at A little hostel named 'Swaggers', like your grannies home!

Day 32 - Lets send the cyclists the scenic route...
  • Omaru - Dunedin
  • Distance - 119.5 km
  • Ave Speed - 14.7 km/h
  • Time - 8 hrs, 6 mins
  • Total Distance - 1906 km

The elements tried their best to stop me! Huge winds really hampered what was a hard day any how! Tired, finally arriving just outside Dunedin I follow the 'alternative' route for cyclists, which just happens to go over Mount Cargill (at 400M!), I think a cyclist cut up the guy who made the rule of no cycles on the much flattter looking highway! I also took a side trip to Seacliff which was worth the hills! Stayed at 'Manor House' $20

Waranakarua Rd Closed, I can get through that....

See I knew it all along..

Day 33 - Rest Day

Day 34 - Have me, have me.. I'm a love albatross!
  • Dunedin - Otago Pennisula
  • Distance - 54.3 km
  • Ave Speed - 14.6 km/h
  • Time - 3 hrs, 42 mins
  • Total Distance - 1961 km

Left Manor House, feeling groggy from the booze the night before & lack of sleep (snigger). I took off to the Pennisula, dropped my bags off at the hostel and went to check out the local wildlife! There are the rare 'Royal Albatross' on the edge of the Pennisula. Stayed at 'McFarmers Backapackers' $25

Day 35 - Detours, will I ever learn?
  • Otago Pennisula - Milton (via Brighton)
  • Distance - 82.4 km
  • Ave Speed - 17.6 km/h
  • Time - 4 hrs, 40 mins
  • Total Distance - 2043 km!!

Threatened to rain, and thankfully never did! Felt easy today despite a huge hill that was on a gravel road to get to Waiholu to rejoin SH1 (after going the back roads to follow the cost to Brighton). Stayed at 'Happy Inn', run by a cool Swiss German guy (who attempted to teach me yoga and juggling, failing to excite me in either)! Oh and a train tooted his horn for me and gave me a wave, Brum are you jealous!?
